Food companies in the breach for goodies from us

In the middle of last year, Minister Crevits proclaimed 'Food connects farmer and citizen'. As full links within the food chain, many Flemish food companies have meanwhile hooked up.

Bringing producer and consumer together

'Food connects farmers and citizens' was created to put local food in the spotlight. Bringing the producer – the farmer – closer to the consumer – the citizen – is the common thread. Also literally, because our products travel shorter distances, which is more sustainable and benefits the environment.

Food industry enthusiastic

No fewer than 57 products from agricultural production are currently processed by food companies, according to Fevia. They are the primary outlet for farmers' products. These local products form the basis for many processed food products. Citizens are often not aware of this close connection. Fevia, the federation of the Belgian food industry, therefore fully supports 'Food connects farmers and citizens'.

Focus on local

Local is also one of the themes in Fevia's Sustainability Roadmap. The term primarily refers to the local origin of the products, which reduces the number of kilometers driven. Our products are also good for local employment and they limit the number of links in the food chain and the use of natural resources.

Month of local food

The entire food chain will also participate in the month of local food in May. This brings together the four objectives of 'Food connects farmers and citizens': to fuel pride for our products, to create a preference for local products among consumers, to increase their recognisability and to make consumers and professionals more consciously choose products from us. In the coming months, we will therefore continue to focus on expanding the number of ambassadors for goodies from us.
